As the founding Artistic Director of Sydney's latest new music project,
Kammerklang, Cameron Lam is used to the challenge of new audiences.
“It’s both the most enjoyable and frustrating part of new music, the audience’s reception”
but as Kammerklang’s 2009 season is beginning, featuring the premieres of Cameron’s latest 2
works, the future couldn’t be brighter.
Cameron’s experience in the Sydney new music scene extends far beyond the
standard music degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
He has made a point of pushing himself above and beyond the limitations of an academic course
and created the opportunity for his own diverse practical experience.
In 2007, Cameron resurrected the Sydney Eclectic Composers Society (SECS),
a group aimed at creating performance opportunities for student composers,
at the Sydney Conservatorium. During his 18 months as President, SECS
premiered over 100 new works in 6 concerts for a variety of ensembles from
solo instruments to wind band and electronics.
Kammerklang, Cameron’s latest project, is equally as grand and
possibly more ambitious, premiering 9 new works by 6 composers for
chamber orchestra and featuring acclaimed percussionist, Claire Edwardes,
of Ensemble Offspring fame.
The concert also features and attached exhibition
of visual arts based on the compositions.
Cameron’s solo work for Claire Edwards, The Colour of Woods,
is an exploration into the patterns of modern and popular ‘grooves’
keeping driving pulse going for forward motion. Accessible and uplifting,
The Colour of Woods exemplifies the nature of Cameron’s work as a composer
and Artistic Director for Kammerklang.
The Colour of Woods, along with many of Cameron’s other pieces are
available for sale through Cameron’s own publishing house, The Music Forge.
